Block Printing Workshops

(7 customer reviews)

Did you know that we have created a block printing comprehensive starter kit 💖 as we cannot meet you, we have created kits with video tutorials for you to use in the comfort of your own home 🙏

Our hand carved wooden printing blocks come direct from artisans in India, where they have been used for printing fabrics for centuries. Hand printing is a slow & methodical process that is deeply absorbing and quiets the mind. All our blocks are ethically sourced, fair trade and sustainable.
Check out our reviews to find out what others thought of the workshop! Please see the photo gallery for an idea of what you could be creating with us….

There are two levels of Block Printing Workshops available (Beginners and Advanced), and they are designed to be a complete package when taken together. Our general Block Printing Workshops are suitable for ages 10+. Please see the photo gallery for an idea of what you could be creating with us….
We also run parent and child printing sessions in school holidays – suitable for children ages 5+

Block Printing Beginners Workshop – 2 hours @ £25 per person

No previous experience required. During this session we will:
Discover more about this traditional form of wood carving and the companies that we work with.
Look at a variety of different printing blocks from different suppliers.
Learn the basics of this technique using small sized blocks, master getting a crisp & reproducible print on scrap fabric.
You will then design and print your own cotton tote bag.

Parent and Child Block Printing Workshop – 1.5 hours @ £20 for the two of you**

Suitable for children ages 5+ No previous experience required – we will learn everything together! We will practice on scrap fabric, and then you will each make your own printed bag. Adults get a long handled cotton tote bag to print, and children get a short handled cotton book bag to print. You can even personalise your creations using alphabet printing blocks.
Please note: We will be using fabric paint, so please ensure your child wears clothing that you don’t mind getting messy in!

**ONE TICKET COVERS ONE ADULT AND ONE CHILD. If you have more than one child – please contact us! You can add children at a cost of £5 per additional child. Must be accompanied by an adult.

Block Printing Advanced Workshop – 3 hours @ £40 per person

Many people like to have completed our Beginners Workshop before moving onto our Advanced Workshop, but it is not essential……
Never used a wooden printing block before? Not a problem! We spend the first ten minutes practicing our techniques (a refresher for those who did the beginners workshop). I can teach you all the basics on the day, so please feel free to book a ticket today!

During this session we will:
Refresh your skills using scraps of fabric and use larger sized printing blocks (you are able to choose your designs)
You will learn about using tessellation to create repeat prints, how to create a mitred corner using borders and how to use a single small block to repeat print a design.
You will design and print a large cotton tea towel (50cm x 70cm)
You will then design & print your own cotton cushion cover (40cm x 40cm) – you will print both sides using different techniques.
We will also talk about other techniques you can use your blocks for – other than printing fabrics!

PLEASE NOTE: We offer the opportunity for delegates to be able to continue their creativity at home. With the ability to buy workshop appropriate tools, paints and materials at favourable prices (we have a card reader too).

Jude and I went on a beginners block printing course last Wednesday. It was the best 3hours+ I’ve been so busy so have had no time to be creative and relax. Karen is an exceptional teacher and we look forward to our advanced course next month. Thank you so much Karen

  6. Emma Howe

My daughter and I took part in one of Karen’s block printing workshop at Ginnys Cafe Boyton in November. We really enjoyed ourselves. Karen’s a great teacher, she used lovely materials and taught us some fabulous techniques. Thanks Karen x

  7. Sara Bottomley

Thoroughly enjoyed the Advanced block printing workshop. After a quick revision of basic technique we went on to tessellations, borders and all over printing. . Karen gave very clear directions and there was plenty of practice fabric to use before we moved on to our own cushion cover and tea towel. Before the workshop Karen got in touch to ask what sort of motifs I liked so she could bring appropriate blocks. That was a great idea and there were blocks for sale too.
A lovely, fun morning and I would recommend it. Have already booked to do the Dot Mandela course next. Many thanks.
